Advancing a Profession
The WWAED is an independent Association of Equine Dentists with DEFRA and RCVS Approval
We are the only dentistry association in the UK that have DEFRA and RCVS approval to hold Level 2 Exemption Examinations.
We are the only association with this approval that monitors and ensures the competency of its members to ensure that the horses and owners get a professional service from competent practitioners.
Important
Information
DEFRA, on the advice of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, approved two groups to run training courses and examinations for the Level 2 Exemption Order required for an Equine Dental Technician to perform Category 2 dental procedures. The groups are: ourselves, the WWAED and BEVA, the British Equine Veterinary Association.
EDT's that take either examination have the equivalent Level 2 Exemption status and therefore the dentists have equivalent status in all aspects.
If your Equine Dental Technician does not have a recognised Level 2 examination success, with either body, then they do not have a formally recognised UK qualification in the field of equine dentistry.

Our dentists are continually monitored. We have entrance level testing and ongoing monitoring for all members
We are the only equine dentist association that works this way
Our dentists:
□ are assessed when they want to join
□ must take a mandatory category 1 entrance examination
□ must undertake mandatory training
□ are encouraged to proceed to their Level 2 examination
□ must take out our purpose-designed insurance from the National farmers Union (NFU).
Understanding the Players in Equine Dentistry in the UK
The Level 2 Exemption Examination was introduced to ensure that non-veterinarians were not performing dentistry procedures that were covered by the Vet act.
DEFRA (Department of Food and Rural Affairs) and the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) along with BEVA (British Equine Veterinary Association) and ourselves, the WWAED (WorldWide Association of Equine Dentistry) formed a working party to define the wording of the Exemption Order.
Following this, two bodies were approved to provide Level 2 Examinations, the WWAED and BEVA. If a dentist has not taken a Level 2 examination with either of these two bodies then they do not have an officially recognised qualification for equine dentistry in the UK. The examinations that each group offer have the same objectives and are, therefore, of equal merit in the industry.
There is no official examination for Level 1 procedures. The WWAED are the only group to ensure that all of its members have to take a Level 1 examination (the association Entrance Exam) before they can be considered a Full Member. If an individual fails the Entrance Examination three times then they have to leave the association. The WWAED Entrance Examination has a theory element and a practical element. A candidate will not be allowed to take the practical element until they have successfully completed the theory element.
