Tallington - Back on Home Soil

Team Harvey Hogg return to home soil this weekend at the third qualifying round of the British Championships. It is a really important meeting for the team as they fight to keep their hands on the British 500cc sidecar title. They lay in 7th place after two rounds and with each team able to drop their worst scoring round the team will need a solid performance. With some teams trying to gain enough points to see them through to Tonbridge in Kent on 21st of the month, and other teams who have already done enough in the first two rounds trying to take points from their main rivals it should be a very interesting meeting for all.

European Final Bielefield - Germany Sunday 25th August

The team enjoyed a break at a holiday park in Holland in the week leading up to the final. The whole week was rain, rain and more rain which didn't help the track preparations in neighboring Germany. Sunday morning training was like riding on a lake and Shaun's arm took a real battering. Track conditions for racing never really improved and we ended the event in 9th place, the highest ranked Brits but not where we dreamed of pre-season, the first Brits on the rostrum of a European Final. But maybe next season will be better at the final to be held at Wimborne who made such an excellent job of last months semi.

Eenrum - Holland Sunday 17th August

The team put Osnabruck behind them and had a great day's racing at the very fast Eenrum track in Holland. Shaun and Danny got off to a great start at 'the Powerplus Tools Masters of Sidecars 2008' even before the racing started and was placed third in the Baanrecord.

The 640m track rode superbly and the meeting was dominated by the dutch teams on there homeground who took the first five places. Team-Matthijssen took top honours as in Osnabruck the previous day. Shaun remarked 'The track was so fast it was flat out all the way. We had a little trouble getting off the gate, the engine seemed a little sluggish. We did think about changing the motor but with the final coming up in seven days we decided against it'. Team Harvey Hogg ended the day in 7th just behind fellow Chelmsford team behind Nick and Abi Radley.

Osnabruck - Saturday 16th August

Team Harvey Hogg began their European tour at Osnabruck in Germany and decided to call it a day after just one heat. The dust was unbelievable said Shaun, you were riding blind and with the European just eight days away we decided not to take any chances. It was in that very heat that fellow Essex crew Trevor Steward and Darren Sargeant were involved in an horrific accident which unfortunately also involved a volunteer marshal. Trevor received serious leg injuries and Darren a broken wrist. Jurgen Schild the marshal was also seriously injured and Team Harvey Hogg along with all the British crews would like to wish him a speedy recovery. Trevor has since decided to retire following the incident but I'm sure we will be seeing him at meetings as soon as he is fit enough. It's also a good time to remember and say thanks to all the marshals throughout the UK and Europe who volunteer their services every week come rain or shine to allow us to race.

Team Harvey Hogg European Tour

A fantastic result for Shaun and Danny as they finished runners-up at the European Semi-Final which was held in Dorset at the beginning of August. Saturday saw the pair take part in two training runs, something British fans are unfamiliar as normally both practice and racing take place on the same day in the UK. But with the arm still not back to full-strength Shaun was only too pleased to have a nights' rest before lining up for the first heat.

And race day couldn't have got off to a better start with Team Harvey Hogg taking two wins and maximum points in the opening two heats. The second of the two heats was the hardest of the day on paper and Shaun and Danny took the chequered flag ahead of the dutch crew and eventual winners on the day, Sven Holstein and Desiree Daubert.

In the third heat a second place behind fellow Brit, Wayne Read meant that a fourth place in their final heat would be enough to qualify for the A Final and a guaranteed place in the European Final. And Shaun took no chances and did exactly what was required on the day, mission accomplished for Team Harvey Hogg, as it was for another two British crews, Team Read and Team Radley. With Allan Morgan already qualified from the 1st semi held earlier in the season that means that GB will have four crews in the final which is to be held in Bielefeld, Germany on August 24th.

But with qualification heats over the day wasn't yet finished as with the top four seeded through into the A final two places in Germany were still up for grabs via the B final. Holstein had suffered a mechanical problem in his final heat and as the clock ticked away his place on the grid looked doubtful. Within many sports this would be looked at with joy from his main rivals, for example, you couldn't see Alonso rolling up his race suit sleeves and helping the McClaren team get Lewis Hamilton on the grid could you? But in 500cc sidecars that sort of thing does happen and other crews rallied around to get the Dutch crew running and with their outfit fixed, they took up position on the grid in the B final and romped to victory.

Just before the A final the heavens opened which soaked the track making tricky conditions for all the outfits, except Holstein that is! Team Harvey Hogg gated second and stayed behind Holstein all the way to the flag to gain a well deserved second step on the rostrum. Fellow Chelmsford based crew Nick and Abi Radley were also on the rostrum.

Shaun remarked "I couldn't believe the speed of Sven in the final, on a tricky track he rode around the corners like the track was still dry. No doubt his ice speedway experience comes in handy in tricky conditions. We obviously would have loved to be on the top of the rostrum but we are more than happy with our weekend's work and we can't wait till the final. Our aim at the beginning of the season was to retain our British Championship and to be on the rostrum at the European Final. After Tonbridge our season looked over, but now the 'dream is still alive'"

This weekend Team Harvey Hogg embark on a mini European tour with a mixture of both racing and holiday. On Saturday they race at Osnabruck in Germany followed the next day by a meeting in Eenrum in Holland. Then it's a few days rest in a Dutch holiday park, before the big one on August 24th, The European 500cc sidecar Final at Bielefeld in Germany!

TEAM HARVEY HOGG BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Team Harvey Hogg were back in winning form at the 500cc sidecar British Championship 2nd qualifying round, held in Cornwall over the weekend. But Shaun had to overcome the pain barrier as the team swept to three wins in the qualifying heats giving the current British Champions maximum points in their quest to reach the final. But with only the heats counting towards the qualifying points tally and Shaun still in a lot of discomfort from his wrist, the team decided to call it a day.

The next target for Shaun and Danny is the European semi-final at Wimborne on August 3rd. With this important meeting being only two-weeks away and with Shaun not fully fit the duo also made the decision not to ride in this week's Best Pairs in Devon. The team were due to partner Allan Morgan but Shaun needs as much time to recover as he continues the physiotherapy to strengthen his injured wrist.

The third and last British Championship qualifying meeting is at Tallington in September and the team know they need to be on top form. Shaun said "With every team able to drop points from one round and with the disaster of the first round, we know we can't have any slip-up's at Tallington or our chance to regain our crown will have vanished".

The British Final has changed venues. With crews not feeling the Maidstone Aces original venue was suitable for this prestigious meeting the club has done a deal with Tonbridge and it will now take place at the famous boarded circuit in Collier Street.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP QUEST CONTINUES

This Sunday Team Harvey Hogg are back in action in the 2nd qualifier in Cornwall and after an extra two weeks of physio Shaun feels his arm in now ready. Shaun remarked "With hindsight our return to the track was a little premature, but it was a chance worth taking. We really want to continue our British Championship winning streak and we will be 'going for it' this weekend." Team Harvey Hogg are travelling down to the West Country on Friday to spend a couple of days relaxing with the family before getting down to some serious racing on Sunday.

Team Harvey Hogg will be joining forces with Allan Morgan and Martin Boyd in this year's Best Pairs Championships which takes place on July 27th near Exeter. The following weekend (3/8) it's the big one! The European Semi-final at Uddens, near Wimborne.

LEAMINGTON PROVES TO BE A PREMATURE RETURN FROM INJURY

Team Harvey Hogg's return to the track didn't pay dividends at Leamington when they were forced to retire after just one ride. Shaun knew it was going to be tough as the plaster was only removed from his arm four days earlier. Shaun stated "It was tough going but even so, it was nice to get back on the bike. After a nice gentle practice, in our first race my wrist began to stiffen up finding it hard to twist the throttle and we could only manage fourth place. I probably could have continued, but with the option to drop points from one of the rounds we decided not to risk it and concentrate on me getting fit for the next round in Cornwall".

SHAUN GETS THE GREEN LIGHT!

Shaun has just returned from injury sports specialist Brian Simpson with some great news. He has been given the green light to race again and Team Harvey Hogg WILL be lining-up at Leamington on Sunday. Shaun's plaster has been removed and replaced with a special lightweight brace and he can't wait to get back in the saddle.

Shaun stated "We announced on the website last week of our intention to be ready for the 2nd round in mid-July. But the injury has improved in leaps and bounds in the past fortnight and I was delighted when Brian gave me the OK to ride in Sunday's first qualifying round. Danny and myself have been champions for the past four seasons and we have no intentions of giving up our crown in 2008".

SO WHAT HAS SHAUN BEEN UP TO SINCE HIS LAST INTERVIEW?

The broken wrist injury is healing well, helped by twice weekly visits to sports injury guru, Brian Simpson in Ipswich. I am now aiming to return in July, hopefully in time to race at the 2nd qualifying round of the 500cc Sidecar British championship which takes place in Cornwall. Brian will be removing my heavy plaster and replacing it with a lightweight plastic support and as long as I can twist a throttle I will be there.

I think I am running out of things to do at the weekend. My business is keeping me busy during the week, but you can only clean and polish the bike so much at the weekend. It has now been straightened and ready to go which adds to my frustration as I can't wait to get back on and race.

I think the wife was only too pleased to get me away from under her feet for a couple of days when I told her I was going to watch the 1st European final in Loppersum. As usual I like to keep busy and ended up helping out Allan Morgan in the pits together with Nick Radley and Trevor Steward. A superb fifth place for Allan and Martin Boyd ensures them a place in the European Final. Congratulations, but sorry guys if all goes to plan at Wimborne in early August you will have to find another pit crew for that one.

New Kevlars are in production at the moment by Colin White. the previous being damaged beyond repair at Tonbridge. I also have also got some body armour on order having come to the conclusion that bouncing along a track at 70mph hurts (especially at my age).

Danny is taking advantage of the enforced break from racing and spending time watching his boys playing rugby. He's also busy at the gym making sure he is in peak condition when we return to racing.

See you all soon

Shaun

INTERVIEW WITH SHAUN HARVEY

The 2008 season has been full of problems and Tonbridge wasn't any different, blowing an engine in practice. The team changed the engine before racing and after a late practice, for the first time all year we felt that we were going to be 'on the pace'.

We took a win, a second and third place in our three heats and with 24pts qualified for the A Final. That's when disaster struck, but until that point what a race! European Champions William & Nathalie Matthijssen, Nick and Abi Radley and ourselves were battling for the top of the rostrum, not a place on the rostrum, we all wanted to be on top! Both Nick and myself wanted to beat the European champions on home soil. I know Nick had already beaten William earlier in the day but the final is the race that matters.

We all gated together and all three were swapping places throughout, nobody wanting to give an inch. But on lap three the race came to a abrupt halt. Coming out of turn two our outfit came together with that of Team Radley and the next thing I knew I was laying on the track looking at the sky.

I've read on forums, seen the crash on video and spoken to other riders. Many have their opinion on what happened, the answer is quite simple, it was a racing accident. The kind of incident that can happen when you are racing hard at speeds of 70+ mph with only millimeters between outfits. And when you are racing against the best Europe has to offer, those guys don't back-off. Anybody that has witnessed a meeting on the continent can back me up on that one!

Those who have jumped to conclusions me and Nick are still on speaking terms, why shouldn't we be It was an racing accident as I have already said, the same could have happened to Nick when William went hard under him on the first lap. I'm a racer, and he's a racer we have been mates for a long time and nothing has changed.

So now to the future!

As you can see from the x-rays my arm was quite badly broken and after talking to the specialist yesterday I felt my season was over. He stated it will take at least ten weeks before I even get the plaster off. That would take me to mid-August and with physio obviously required to get my wrist strong again that would pretty much be the season ended.

But I am now aiming to return in time for the European Semi which takes place at Wimborne on August 3rd. Hopefully with the help of Ipswich based injury specialist, Brian Simpson who has done wonders for many racers. I have an appointment on Monday an will know more then.

One obvious disappointment we have is that we will definitely be unable to compete in the first two rounds of the British championship which has a new format this season. With points from the qualifiers counting at the Maidstone finals we have written off any chance of regaining our British championship crown.

Danny is still suffering from a stiff neck since the accident and obviously shares my frustration of having to watch from the other side of the fence. But rest assured Team Harvey Hogg will be back as soon as possible and firing on all cylinders.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have sent get well messages, especially our newest fans Max (aged 6) and Harry (aged 4) thanks for the email!

UPDATE ON SHAUN'S INJURY

Shaun went into hospital last week for an operation on his damaged right wrist. His operation was a success, but after a further consultation today he was told that his arm will remain in plaster for around ten weeks. After that he will obviously need physiotherapy to get his wrist strong enough for racing. So it looks like Team Harvey Hogg could be out for the 2008 season.

Further update including interview with Shaun to be added in the next couple of days.

SHAUN INJURY LATEST

Shaun is now at home after suffering a badly broken arm, cuts and bruises after a nasty looking crash in the 500cc Sidecar final at Tonbridge yesterday. He is due to return to hospital in the next couple of days to have another x-ray and have the extent of the injury re-assessed.

Danny walked away from the crash, but no doubt feels a little bashed around today once his adrenaline levels dropped.

TEAM HARVEY HOGG LOOK FOR A RETURN TO FORM

The TMMCC has put together a superb line-up in both Solos and Sidecars for the Lester Goodwin Memorial meeting on 18th May at their Collier Street circuit.

Without doubt this is the best starting line-up seen at the Boarded Circuit since the 2006 Bonfire Burnup. As expected, the 500cc European Sidecars have turned out in force to pay tribute to the memory of one of the great champions and friend Lester Goodwin.

No less than nine European crews are at the meeting, including current European Champions William & Nathalie Matthijssen from Holland, along with fellow Europeans Marco Hundsrucker, Patric Metzger, Willfred Detz, Marc Detz, Lund Stinus and former European Champions Karl Keil and Sven Holstein. Some real thrilling action is guaranteed with the best of British crews on home soil trying to put one over on their European counterparts.

Shaun Harvey and Danny Hogg will be on the top of their game for sure as will father & daughter partnership of Nick & Abi Radley. 16 year old Abi now looking like she's settling into the role of passenger very well. This ultra smooth circuit should bring out the best from them both and hopefully Shaun and Danny will be back in top form for what should be a thrilling meeting!

Champions of Champions - Swingfield, Kent

After the road trip to Germany, Team Harvey Hogg returned to domestic action at the Champion of Champions meeting near Folkestone.

The team had an eventful start to the day when their transporter broke down on the M20. A big thank you to all the riders that helped us get our bike and my family to the meeting in time for a late practice, leaving Steven (Lofty) with the transporter which was recovered and taken back home. Lofty then made his way to Kent in our other race van.

On track and racing wasn't much better after starting the meeting under geared by a long way. In the 1st race going to the line the foot loop broke off which we tie clipped, hoping it would stay on. But with Shaun unable to hang out in the turns as well as motor problems, the team did well to finish 2nd to Nick and Abi Radley. When returning to the pits it was discovered the inlet manifold jubilee clip was loose and was taking in air.

In the 2nd race the team changed the gearing, but a bad start forced us to enter the first turn 3rd. After a hard fight on the 2nd lap Shaun drove under Wayne Read and then the footrest broke once more. Although hampered by a lack of footrest the team managed to get to his back wheel of Nick and Abi Radley but once again they had to be satisfied with another 2nd place.

In the 3rd and last heat with the footrest fixed once more the team had their first race win of the day. In the final we made the start and were level with the outfits of Team Radley and Wayne Read. Nick was on the outside and Wayne on the inside just creeping in front and sandwiching us enough to force Shaun to throttle back, allowing them to get away. Although they tried hard to fight back, the stones and ruts were becoming a problem, so team Harvey Hogg had to settle for the third step on the rostrum.

The team still needs to find form which has deserted them at the moment but it will come.

May Day in Germany

Team Harvey Hogg travelled to Germany on May 1st for the traditional May Day Grasstrack in Ludinghausen, held on a super fast 1000-metre circuit.

The team was once again some of the best in Europe including European Champions William and Nathalie Matthijssen. Shaun and Danny raced hard all day and made the final after taking two second places and a third. But a bad start in the final saw them having to find their way through the field and they managed to get up to fourth place.

Despite just missing out on the rostrum, Shaun was satisfied with the result and spoke of how much he enjoyed the meeting. He stated "It was a superb day in front of around 10,000 fans who surrounded the large circuit four deep. The whole town turns out for the meeting and they managed to empty seven lorries of beer throughout the day.

If you love your grass track then Ludinghausen is a great place to go".

PROBLEMS AT HIGH EASTER FOR TEAM HARVEY HOGG

Team Harvey Hogg was hit by machinery problems at Sunday's Lester "Bert" Goodwin trophy meeting at High Easter.

The meeting was won by European Champions William and Nathalie Matthijssen from Holland. The Dutch crew went unbeaten throughout the meeting to win the final ahead of another Chelmsford based crew Nick and Abi Radley.

Team Harvey Hogg's day started with a second place behind Matthijssen, but the outfit was not 100% and the team decided to change the carburetor hoping to solve the problem.

In their second heat the team again had to settle for second place, this time behind Wayne Read. The bike was still not 'on song', so this time the team decided on an engine change. But with the clock counting down and the new engine failing to  fire-up the team came to the line alongside the Matthijssen's and the Radley's on the European Champion's second machine. Having never ridden the machine they looked uncomfortable from the gate and had to settle with fourth place.

With the interval allowing extra time and with the luxury of having engine tuner and sponsor Matthijssen in the adjacent pit, the bike seemed sorted as they lined up in their last heat. With just an outside chance of making the A Final they were ahead in the first bend followed by Read and Matthijssen. The European champion went past Read and the hunt was on for Team Harvey Hogg. Shaun and Danny still led as they went into the final lap, but went wide onto the slippery outside line giving Matthijssen room to go inside and take the chequred flag.

The Team's last chance to make the A Final was by winning the B Final. They gated well, but so to did Simon Beard and Allan Morgan. With three outfits going into the first bend together it was Team Harvey Hogg on the outside who lost out, as in the previous race the slick outside line proved costly. Paul Moorcock came underneath and with the back-wheel struggling to find grip any chance of victory was gone.

The team will now be preparing for Thursday's International meeting in Germany.

GRASS TRACK SEASON "BACK ON TRACK" AT COLLIER STREET

Two Chelmsford based 500cc sidecar teams stood on the rostrum as the 2008 grass track season got back on track at Collier Street last Sunday. Early season meetings have been either cancelled or badly affected by the recent wet weather, but conditions were almost perfect at the boarded Kent circuit.

British Champions Team Harvey Hogg were in top form and won all four of their heats, giving them the first choice of gate positions for the final. The father and daughter team of Nick and Abi Radley qualified third, having had a win and three second places on their way to the final.

When the starting tapes rose Team Harvey Hogg made a superb start and led into the first bend with Radley close behind. But when the crews went into the second bend Radley went too wide and had to close the throttle as his machine hit a wet part of the freshly watered track. Eventual runner-up Simon Beard took the opportunity and went through into second place. Harvey controlled the race from the front and took the chequered flag, closely followed by Beard and Radley.

The two rivals will be in high-speed action this Sunday April 27th at High Easter near Chelmsford, along with the cream of the UK's 500cc sidecar crews. The 500cc Sidecar Association are holding a sidecar only meeting in memory Lester Goodwin who tragically lost his life at the track last year. European champion William Matthijssen is coming over from Holland along with other dutch crews to make it a truly international line-up. The 33-race programme which also includes 1000cc sidecars begins at 1pm with practice at 11am. Entrance is £8 with under 14's free.

The 2008 SEASON GETS UNDERWAY

A good start for Team Harvey Hogg as the 2008 season got underway at Tallington. A warm day greeted the season although previous heavy rain created very soft ground which created a very rough, deep track.

Shaun and Danny got off to a superb start winning all three of their heats and the semi-final, as did fellow Essex driver Nick Radley and stand-in passenger Paul Whitelam Jr.

In the final Radley made the better start and led into the first corner. Team Harvey Hogg tucked into second place and it was Radley who took the chequered flag. Shaun deciding not to try for the pass as with the tricky track conditions he decided to put safety first. But the pair are happy to have started the season with four wins and a second place.

A new bike is being prepared at the moment and the team will be trying a new headstock and forks at the Maidstone Aces Meeting on April 13th. Simon Beard brought the 2006 sidecar complete with WM tuned GM engine, He rode well at Tallington and seems more than happy with his purchase.

This weekend's Champion of Champions meeting in Kent is cancelled and is moved to the 11th May due to a waterlogged track.

PROUD WINNERS OF THE LESTER GOODWIN TROPHY
Team Harvey Hogg have become the first holders of the Lester Goodwin Trophy having won the 2007 British Championships. The trophy, in memory of one of the sport's best loved characters and former British Champion who tragically died after a racing accident last season, has replaced the original 500cc sidecar British Championship Trophy. The team was honoured to be presented with the trophy as Lester was a close friend of the whole team and he will be greatly missed by many around the circuits in both Britain and across Europe. Such was the popularity of Lester, two clubs are holding meetings this season as tribute to one of the sports greats and the Team Harvey Hogg will obviously be racing at both. The first is at High Easter in April followed by the Tonbridge event in May. Both meetings are sure to attract high class entries.

TEAM HARVEY HOGG PREPARE TO DEFEND THEIR BRITISH TITLE
Shaun and Danny will face a new challenge in their bid to defend the 2007 title they won at High Easter last season. The 2008 British championship now has three qualifying rounds in Leamington, Cornwall and Tallington. The top crews from those meetings will qualify for the Championships Final which is being promoted by the Maidstone club in September. The team will be picking up all rebuilt engines ready for 2008 season from WM Tuning on 22nd February and will also have a new chassis which is being built by Essex Wheels and Engineering at the moment. This will be ready for trials in April.

Multiple British Grass Track 500cc sidecar champions Shaun Harvey and Danny Hogg will be keeping you up to date as they prepare for the new 2008 season, which begins in March.

Their aim for this forthcoming season is to regain the British Championships and they are very much looking forward to the challenge of the European Championships. The latter sees them line-up in the second semi-final which is being held at Uddens in Dorset this August. Qualification would see them travel to Germany to face the best Europe has to offer in the finals a challenge the pair would relish.

Team Harvey Hogg has a full season planned both at home and on the Continent.

Early highlights include the Champion of Champions in Kent and the 500cc Sidecar International which is held at High Easter, close to our hometown of Chelmsford. Both the previous events are held in April then in May the Tonbridge Club hold the Lester Goodwin Memorial Meeting at the Collier Street boarded circuit.
